A Sick Day for Amos McGee

Reader’s Annotations: This book is beautifully illustrated and also the story of friendship between man and creatures is equally beautiful. It is a great opportunity to encourage children to care for each other, and also every creature on the earth.

Author: Philip C. Stead

Illustrator: Erin E. SteadAge: 2 - 6 yearsgenre/subject: ChildPlot Summary: Amos McGee works at the City Zoo. His work includes playing chess with the Elephant, racing the tortoise, reading to the owl and so on. The animals look forward to Amos' daily visits. So much so, the animals decide to visit Amos when he wakes up too sick to get up and go to the Zoo.Evaluation: Great story time book. Illustrations are done with woodblock printing and pencil, and are superb. The face of Amos as well as each animal looks weathered but gentle. Conversation starter on how to care for others, or what it feels like to be sick. It is also a wonderful zoo book! Significance & Bibliographic Usefulness: Illustrations! Erin E. Stead won the Caldecotte for this book.Readalikes: If I Ran the Zoo, by Dr. SeussAwards/Lists:
