Happy Pig Day

Reader’s Annotation: This is a book for real pig lovers! And that could be just about anyone. For those who have ever felt excluded or on the outside, looking in, Pig explains to Elephant that anyone is able to celebrate Happy Pig Day, not just pigs.
Author/Illustrator: Mo Willems
Age: 4 - 8
genre/subject: Children's literature, picture book
Plot Summary: Pig tells Elephant that it is "Happy Pig Day." Elephant listens as Pig tell him all about the day and all the ways he likes to celebrate the occasion. Elephant feels left out, because he is not a pig. That is when Pig reveals that the day is not only for Pig, but anyone who loves a Pig.
Evaluation: Positive way to talk about differences. Also a good opportunity to encourage honoring other people. For instance, learning to give to others on their birthday.
Significance & Bibliographic Usefulness: The pictures are simple. There is a great phrase worked into the storyline, "Oinky, oink, oink!"
