Reader’s Annotation: No one knows why the Chickens built a wall, but it all started on the day the hedgehog showed up. This is somewhat of a cautionary tale based on the concepts of fear and discrimination. The illustrations of the chickens working through the winter months to build a towering, yet pointless, wall allows for parents, teachers and storytellers to ask questions about social issues that children are actually quite capable of discussing.

Plot Summary: Hedgehog appears in at a farm with chickens, who scare easily. As a result, they build a wall. When the hedgehog emerges from a pile of hay inside the barn, where he slept all winter, the chickens realize he is harmless and tear down the wall.
